Most people think that magnesium is just for relaxing muscles or easing constipation, but it is actually an essential mineral that our body needs for over 300 functions!
Unfortunately, due to unbalanced diets and overloads of stress, many of us are deficient in this magical mineral.
So, what exactly does magnesium do for our bodies? Here’s a small glimpse into the world of this magnificent mineral:
Regulates blood pressure
Synthesizes DNA
Activates vitamin D
Regulates electrolytes
ATP production
Testosterone production
Fat oxidation
Endothelial function
Anti-coagulation
AND SO. MUCH. MORE.
Symptoms of low magnesium may include headaches, muscle spasms, high blood pressure, constipation, restless legs, lack of energy, or irregular heart rhythms.
While the preferred method of boosting your magnesium levels is through foods such as spinach, pumpkin seeds, black beans, dark chocolate, or tofu, it is possible that they just don’t contain enough magnesium due to farmers not fertilizing their fields properly.
It’s also important to note that magnesium cannot due its job without the help of other vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and sodium. This further proves the importance behind eating a balanced diet.
My favorite way to supplement magnesium is with Earthley’s Good Night Lotion. It contains magnesium chloride, a naturally occurring form of magnesium that is extracted from seawater.
This lotion was a lifesaver for my sleep when I was pregnant and continues to be a staple in my bedtime routine.
If lotion isn’t your thing, you can also take Epsom salt baths, try floatation therapy (I’ve been here and loved it!), or swim in the ocean if it’s accessible to you.
Ideally, I would choose the ocean as I never felt or slept better than when I was in Aruba and spent every day in the ocean. (But maybe that was just the 5 days of no kids or responsibilities! 😅)
Do you supplement magnesium?
